What you need to know about Ramadan

Millions of Muslims across the world have begun observing Islam's holy month of Ramadan. But what is it about?

Ramadan is regarded as Islam's holiest month in the Muslim lunar calendar. The month generally lasts between 29 to 30 days, and represents a period of spiritual discipline and purification.

It is observed by most of the world's roughly 1.6 billion Muslims through fasting, prayer, alms-offering and recitations of the Quran, Islam's holy book.

Observing Ramadan is considered the one of the five pillars of Islam, which include the declaration of faith, charity and pilgrimage to Mecca, the religion's holiest site.

According to the second chapter of the Quran, "The month of Ramadan in which was revealed the Qur'an, a guidance for mankind, and clear proofs of the guidance, and the Criterion (of right and wrong)."

Year 9 and 10 Van Gogh and the Seasons Excursion

Van Gogh and the Seasons presents sections devoted to each of the four seasons. Our students were invited to explore Van Gogh’s profound connection to nature through nearly 50 paintings and drawings, many of which depict places that were the setting for defining moments in the artist’s tumultuous life. Drawing extensively from Van Gogh’s personal letters and research into his interest in literature and nature, Van Gogh and the Seasons provides insight into the influences and themes that dominate much of this visionary artist’s work.

This is a once in a lifetime experience. Van Gogh’s exhibition is curated by Sjraar van Heugten, an independent art historian and former Head of Collections at the Van Gogh Museum, Amsterdam, Van Gogh and the Seasons is exclusive to Melbourne and presents the largest collection of Van Gogh artworks to ever travel to Australia.
